Wealthsimple culture is unlike any other finance company
You might just say it’s the future of the finance industry; Wealthsimple is gaining traction as the new, simple, and affordable way for almost anyone to start investing. We recently went behind-the-scenes of this innovative company to see the office in action, meet employees and learn about the culture driving its success.
The space (is gorgeous)
Definitely unlike most traditionally corporate finance companies, this 8000 sq. feet space is cozy and inviting. It features 20-foot ceilings, mid-century modern furniture, an old-fashioned library/meeting room.
“We are encouraged to never stop learning in our role. I enjoy having the ability to attend conferences and borrow whatever I want from the library.” –Mallory Greene, People Operations
A newly renovated kitchen
“At the end of the day we all share one main goal and that is to grow the business.”— Jonathan Nguyen, Wealth Concierge
Startup life is like family
“I was employee #5—so there were only 5 of us trying to launch this huge startup and build the company as fast as possible. We spent so much time together and got so close, so as we grew it was almost like adding people to our family.” –Mallory Greene, People Operations
In two years, Wealthsimple has grown from 5 to 45 people and they are looking to double the team by next year. So what are they looking for in a candidate?
“At the end of the day cultural fit is most important, you can have the smartest person in the room but if they’re not a cultural fit, it’s not a good hire for us” –Mallory Greene, People Operations
Candidates typically go through a dynamic and hands-on interview process over the course of one visit, lunch with the team included! Wealthsimple takes the time to look for new hires who will mesh well with the team.
Free catered lunches—a different vendor every day!
With options for vegans, vegetarians and carnivores, everyone is included. By offering free catered lunches, Wealthsimple encourages the team to eat together and bond. Another perk? Unlimited snacks! But if you want an Oreo Ice-cream Sandwich, you better be quick—they are demolished quickly!
What’s fun at Wealthsimple?
Previous outings have included karaoke, a Jays game and even a Drake concert. Having fun is definitely a priority at Wealthsimple and semi-annually there is a social retreat. The company is really active in the tech community so there are also opportunities to attend conferences and events.
“It’s really collaborative. There’s no sense of competition. There’s a lot of responsibility for each person in a startup and you just can’t do it all by yourself” -Jonathan Nguyen, Wealth Concierge
“This is the best health care I’ve ever had—it’s especially impressive for such a young company” –Daniel O’Brien, Software Engineer
Wealthsimple works really hard to make new hires feel welcomed – you can even choose your preferred computer system upon arrival. There’s a lot of freedom to make yourself comfortable in your workspace and employees are encouraged to work cross-functionally to learn the ins and outs of the business.
A Bike Share membership makes for easier transportation on the busy Toronto streets. And there is an ongoing ping-pong tournament.
“It’s a pretty young culture, always good food, beer, and snacks on hand.” – Jonathan Nguyen, Wealth Concierge
