Borrowell is on a mission to make financial services fast, fair and friendly. We met with the staff to find out what it’s like working for this rapidly growing company.
Borrowell is leveraging technology to make personal finances more convenient for Canadians through their two core services; personal loans and free credit scores.
This journey began when the CEO, Andrew Graham, saw debt levels in Canada on the rise, and the problems that so many were facing with credit card debt. Convinced there had to be a better way, Borrowell was started. COO, Eva Wong explained how excited they were about helping Canadians take control of their finances and live happier lives. Seeing the positive impact of their work is what really brings all the employees together and drives the company forward.
Work Hard, Play Hard
Borrowell has very high expectations of its employees and they gladly rise to the occasion. Everyone is very passionate about what they do and willing to put in the work to get the job done. At the same time, there is room to take a break and relax, having a nerf gun fight or checking out the company’s fantasy football league. There is also a very high level of humility in the culture, no one is afraid to roll up their sleeves and do whatever it takes to help a customer.

Borrowell is dedicated to ensuring their employees are fulfilled in both their professional and personal lives. The fridges are always stocked with snacks and healthy fruits and vegetables, and employees are encouraged to use their vacation time. The company also places a lot of importance on development. Borrowell will pay for courses and send people to conferences to further their career development. Some of the company outings include movies, curling, ping pong and karaoke.
A Day in the Life
There is no such thing as an ordinary day at Borrowell. Opening and closing hours are flexible but most people show up around 8:30-9:30 and stay until 5:30-6:30, and stay late or log back on in the evening as necessary. Some tasks that an employee might be doing include building models, figuring out how to better price products, trying to derive insights from data, speaking to customers, and meeting with people inside and outside the company. Borrowell is very big on collaborative sessions. That being said, it is essential to be a self-starter, as there is so much someone could work on but they must be able to decide what will be most impactful for the team. One employee we spoke to even runs session on R and python to help teach and give back to his coworkers.
Getting Involved with Borrowell
Borrowell is currently looking for a marketing specialist (new grad or couple years experience), UI/UX specialist, developers and testers. However, the roles they need are constantly changing so if you are interested in the company it is best to reach out and get a conversation started, even if you don’t match one of these positions. Borrowell has the goal of becoming a gender-balanced company. Currently, women make up about a third of the team, which is better than the start-up average, but Borrowell aspires to do better.
The company is looking for people who are passionate, self-starters, and a good cultural fit. The interview process begins with behavioural and culture questions to determine how well a candidate fits with the organization. Next is a technical assessment which is assignment-based and similar to the work they would be doing at Borrowell. A third round interview is held if needed.
